Stand Up 2 (Skin) Cancer

I’m honored and thrilled to be taking part in the Stand Up 2 Cancer TV broadcast, airing live tonight at 8 p.m. on all major TV networks! Watch for my hilarious skit with Ken Jeong (from The Hangover and Community), which demonstrates the importance of skin exams. I’ll be joining stars like George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, and Michael Douglas to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Since 2008, this organization has raised more than $100 million, which goes to more than 200 researchers that are developing applications for many forms of cancers — including skin cancer.

As a dermatologist, I know the importance of early detection since in many cases skin cancer, even melanoma, the most deadly type, can be treated and even cured if found early. However, this means that we need to be aware of checking our skin ourselves (just like you do a breast self exam) as well as going in yearly for a skin exam from a dermatologist (like you would get a breast exam every year). During your skin exam, be sure that your doctor checks everywhere, even under clothing, since skin cancers or precancerous growths can hide in unexpected places. (After all, we don’t have X-ray vision.) If you don’t feel like you’re getting a thorough exam, don’t be afraid to speak up or consider finding another doctor, since it takes time to do a complete examination. I generally recommend to my patients that they get their skin checked yearly, although if you’ve had a lot of sun in the past, or if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, then you should be checked more often.
